10:56 am - Mötley Crüe's Tommy Lee Talks Buddhism
Tommy 1

In a recent interview wild and not-so-wicked rocker Tommy Lee talks about his Buddhist beliefs and how he applies them to his life.

TOMMY LEE: I practice Buddhism, and I definitely believe there's someone higher and greater than all of us out there, you know...It was a couple of years ago. I was in jail for an entire summer, like four, five months, and I started reading a couple of books on it, and I was like, "Wow!" It's really amazing you know. It's good stuff.

QUESTION: So what about Buddhism have you been able to apply to your life? And what about it has really helped you?

TOMMY LEE: It’s just compassion really, more than anything. Like, if you see a little spider on the ground, you don't smash him, you grab him and put him outside and let him go rock out. I think, it's just compassion for everything, all things.

Does he star in porn films?

Also: 'someone higher and greater than all of us out there'

I don't recall Buddhist believing in 'someone' higher...

Is there a litmus test for Buddhists now?

Yes.

But seriously, is he the same Tommy Lee who does the porn films with Pamela Anderson?

Yes, though it was about 10 years ago. People can change, though Motley Crue still sucks.

He doesn't even understand Buddhism.

Porn stars cannot be Buddhists. There is no debate about this.

The definition of sexual misconduct can be rather ambiguous at times, so whether or not doing porn is a non-virtue or not is debatable.

I don't see why a porn star couldn't be a Buddhist. They might not be encouraged to take the tonsure, but they're allowed to practice, take refuge in the triple gem, etc...

If they take refuge and commit actions contrary to the five lay vows that they took (no killing, stealing, sexual misconduct, lying, intoxicants), then they perhaps generate the negative karma of committing the action itself coupled with breaking a bow.

Again, what makes a Buddhist a Buddhist is refuge in the triple gem.

It wasn't 'porn' in the commercial sense- it was a home video, intended for private use.

If it comes to questioning 'buddhist credentials', I would question his violent tendencies...

Two things.

A)Do porn stars have the Buddha Nature?
B)Does having a private sex tape of you and your wife stolen and sold by a third party make you a porn star?

Can Ikkyu be a Buddhist?

Further...

Was Maezumi Roshi not a Buddhist because he was a drunk? Or Chogyam Trungpa? Was Kodo Sawaki not a Buddhist because he fought in the Russo-Japanese war as a young man?

Do only the people we like deserve liberation?

You don't understand Mahayana.

Enlightened beings are plentiful. They qualify as "someone higher and greater than all of us" in samsara.

Are you aware of the Trikaya doctrine?

I don't think he meant that. I think he was being habitually Judeo-Christian.

How do you know for sure?

That might just be the way he naturally speaks about higher beings/powers. He was born and raised in an English speaking environment -- and probably a predominately Christian one, so saying "higher person" is just the lexical item he is most prone to utilize when referring to higher beings like Buddhas and Bodhisattvas.

No need to criticize him. Rejoice in his study of Buddhism and cultivation of compassion.

I don't think he was referring to Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. I think he was referring to God/Nature and was too stupid to realize that Buddhism isn't really about that.

You expect me to think that an American porn star celebrity who married a dimwitted porn star self-hater knows about Buddhism because he said he was one?

If he has taken refuge in the Buddha, Dharma and Sangha, then I rejoice.

If he actually specifically makes a glaring error about Buddhist doctrine (that is to say he talks about a creator God or something), then feel free to point it out and refute what he has said.

As far as I can tell from the statements above, he hasn't made specific mention to a creator god or whatever, so I can't say he has made an error. Like I said, that might just be the way he refers to Buddhas. He might have slim knowledge about Buddhist doctrine, but then I've met LIFELONG Buddhists in Japan who are past eighty years of age and they believe in certain things that are fairly contrary to standard Buddhist doctrine and even metaphysics (ideas like spirits of the deceased hanging around in the household altar). However, this old lady, my friend's grandmother, recites sutras every day and does daily offerings. Is she not Buddhist?

Yes, we have to draw the line somewhere. Someone outright denying Buddha's teachings and reinventing everything in a New Age kind of way is probably not a Buddhist, but if an individual takes faith in the triple gem and takes to heart even a syllable of what Buddhist doctrine says (like compassion), then they're Buddhist enough in my mind, and I rejoice in their cultivation of compassion and their dedication to the most perfect of teachers (the Buddha).

Huh. I admit that I'm a bit skeptical, but I hope it works out well for him and makes his life better. Heck, anyone not born into Buddhism was new once, and probably made a few doctrinal mis-steps.

Only time will tell how things work out, and I hope they work out well. :)
